AUB GHI: Leveraging AWS to accelerate content delivery

The Global Health Institute (GHI) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) is a regional leader and key partner in addressing global health challenges with a focus on the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. GHI employs an interdisciplinary approach to tackle global health issues and aims to transform the global health dialogue by focusing on contextualized and sustainable solutions that are proportionally dependent on local and regional capacity.
THE CHALLENGE

Scalability and Content Delivery

Being an institution dedicated to tackling global health challenges, AUB GHI sought a resilient and scalable solution. Their objective was to enhance content delivery speed, enable automatic scalability, and ensure redundancy across diverse applications and workloads.
 Initially hosted on-premises, AUB GHI’s applications and workloads posed significant challenges for their team. Issues included suboptimal performance impacting user experience, restricted availability for a global user base, and limitations in scalability and elasticity to adapt to unpredictable demand. 
 Failure to address these challenges could potentially jeopardize GHI’s efficiency in delivering services and achieving its objectives.
THE SOLUTION

Secure and Scalable

Digico Solutions, equipped with a proficient team of certified Solutions Architects and DevOps Engineers, introduced an extensive hosting solution tailored for AUB GHI on AWS.

Seamless Migration Process
In collaboration with the GHI team, Digico executed a seamless migration of three workloads from on-premises to AWS. Leveraging a suite of AWS services, including AWS Fargate, Route 53, AWS Load Balancer, AWS CloudFront, Aurora Serverless, and more.

Automated Deployment Orchestration
Automated deployment orchestration was achieved through CI/CD pipelines, utilizing key AWS services such as AWS CodeBuild, AWS CodeDeploy, and AWS CodePipeline. This not only enhanced efficiency but also ensured a consistent and reliable deployment process. In addition, Digico Solutions employed Cloudformation for infrastructure as code, creating modular components for a smooth transition of each solution element.

Enhanced Content Delivery

The content delivery acceleration through Amazon CloudFront resulted in faster delivery of content to end users, improving the user experience.

On-Demand Workload Scaling

The auto-scalability of the architecture allowed GHI’s applications to handle spikes in demand without performance degradation.

Robust Infrastructure Deployment

The use of AWS CDK and AWS CodePipeline for IaC practices streamlined the deployment process and improved overall operational efficiency.

Available and Fault Tolerant

The redundancy provided by the multi-Availability Zone setup with backup and disaster recovery on Amazon RDS MySQL ensured high availability and data protection.

Result Driven

AUB GHI was able to host their different applications on AWS with enhanced speed, availability, and scalability. This transformation has empowered them to deliver services efficiently and meet their objectives with increased effectiveness.
